“IN The Beginning Notes” Based on John 1:1-3 & 14

Posted: December 5, 2016 in faith

John 1:1-5 and 14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

4 Vital Things John Wants Us to Understand about Jesus

  1. Jesus is eternal “In the beginning was the Word” “He was with God in the beginning”
  2. Jesus has an eternal relationship with God (The Father) “the Word was with God”, “He was with God in the beginning”
  3. Jesus is God, “the Word was God.”
  4. Jesus is the creator of the Universe “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” (He was not made, He is the Maker)

Why Are These Truths Important For Us to Understand

  1. It is essential that we begin to comprehend the infinite Majesty of Jesus: yes, we celebrate His birth as a human baby- but in order to begin the process comprehending Him, we do not begin at the manger- we have to begin, “in the beginning.” His mission did not begin at 3 BC in Bethlehem. His mission began long before the formation of the Universe! He has always been, He will always be, He has not changed, nor will He change.
  • Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

What does that mean to me? It means that in this world full of change, where there seems to be nothing constant that we can depend on- we have a relationship with our God, that never changes.

  1. When we listen to, reflect on, read the words of Jesus, we are literally hearing the very Words of God Himself.
  • Hebrews 1:1-3 “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.”
  • John 14:10 “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.”

What does that mean to me? It means that God is personal. God is not some cosmic deity, that wound up the universal clock and is now sitting back watching things unfold- like we watch TV. He choose to become a person- like us, with feelings, emotions, love, hardships- to experience life in everyway that we experience life.

  1. 3. Jesus’ is an eternal, relational being- who desires a relationship with you- and He wants you to have a relationship with His Eternal Father.
  • John 17: 1-5 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”

What does that mean to me? Now you can also be a part of God’s family. You have been invited to Christmas dinner- with Jesus and your Heavenly Father.

  1. Jesus is the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe. There is nothing that was made that was not made through Him. There is nothing that goes on with out Him knowing it.
  • John 14:12-14 “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

What does that mean to me? You are connected! You are connected to the Creator and Sustainer of the Universe. There is nothing TOO Big for Him to handle it. Many times our prayers are too small, because our image of Jesus is infinitely TOO small!
